Michaels formed Poison in Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania in 1983 alongside guitarist C.C. DeVille, bassist Bobby Dall, and drummer Rikki Rockett before the band relocated to Los Angeles to pursue the Sunset Strip scene that was producing acts like Mötley Crüe and Ratt. Poison's debut album Look What the Cat Dragged In (1986) was recorded on a shoestring budget but connected immediately with a young audience hungry for fun, unpretentious hard rock, reaching number three on the Billboard 200. Open Up and Say...Ahh! (1988) and Flesh & Blood (1990) pushed the band to even greater commercial heights, with Every Rose Has Its Thorn — a deeply personal acoustic ballad Michaels wrote about a relationship — spending three weeks at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 and becoming one of the most enduring power ballads of the entire era.

Beyond his work with Poison, Michaels has maintained an active solo career since the mid-1990s, releasing multiple albums that blend his hard rock roots with country influences — a combination that reflects his genuine love of both genres and has earned him a following that extends well beyond traditional rock audiences.
