Meldrum was a multinational heavy metal band built around the guitar work of Michelle Meldrum, an American guitarist born in Detroit, Michigan on September 28, 1968. She grew up in a family of musicians and actors — her grandfather Thomas Hubbard and great-uncle Elbert Hubbard were both notable figures — and the family relocated to Los Angeles when she was 13. She began playing guitar at 14 and threw herself into the city's rock scene with characteristic intensity. Her first serious project was Wargod, a thrash metal band she co-founded with Gene Hoglan, who would go on to drum for Dark Angel, Death, and Strapping Young Lad. When Wargod dissolved she co-founded Phantom Blue — an all-female heavy metal band from Hollywood that became the first and only female artists signed to Mike Varney's Shrapnel Records, just three months after forming, and subsequently landed deals with Roadrunner Records and Geffen. Phantom Blue released their self-titled debut in 1989 and Built to Perform in 1993, with guitarists who had studied under Paul Gilbert and Bruce Bouillet of Racer X.
After Phantom Blue disbanded, Meldrum married Europe guitarist John Norum in 1995 and relocated to Sweden. There she formed Meldrum in late 1999, assembling a multinational lineup with Swedish musicians including vocalist Moa Holmsten, bassist Frida Ståhl, and drummer Fredrik Haake. The debut album Loaded Mental Cannon was recorded in 2000 and released in 2001 on Record Heaven, featuring guest appearances from Brian Robertson of Thin Lizzy, Marcel Jacob of Talisman, and Norum himself. The album announced a sound Michelle described as testosterone-driven in-your-face metal with elements of Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin — raw, heavy, and completely her own.
The band earned their reputation on the road. In 2005 Meldrum toured for three months with Zakk Wylde's Black Label Society across sold-out venues in the US and Europe. That same fall they joined Motorhead as special guests on their 30th anniversary European tour — five tours with Lemmy's band in total, having first met him during the Phantom Blue years at the Sweden Rock Festival in 2002. They also toured with Sepultura, Danzig, and Nashville Pussy. The second album Blowin' Up the Machine arrived in 2007 on Frontiers Records in Europe and Locomotive Records in North America, featuring a guest vocal from Lemmy himself on the track Miss Me When I'm Gone, along with contributions from Gene Hoglan and Phantom Blue drummer Linda McDonald. A live DVD, Loaded Live, documented the band's formidable stage presence.
Michelle Meldrum fell into a coma on May 18, 2008, and died three days later on May 21 from complications of a cystic growth on her brain that had restricted blood and oxygen flow. She was 39 years old and left behind John Norum and their young son Jake. A memorial concert was held at the Whisky a Go Go in Hollywood in May 2009, with the surviving original Phantom Blue lineup reuniting in her honor for the first time in more than fourteen years. Meldrum disbanded following her death.
