Their early albums Lacuna Coil (1998), In a Reverie (1999), and Unleashed Memories (2001) established their template and built a strong European following, but it was Comalies (2002) that broke them to a much wider international audience, eventually selling over 600,000 copies — an extraordinary figure for a gothic metal act. Karmacode (2006) debuted at number twenty-eight on the Billboard 200, a remarkable achievement for a European metal band, and produced the massive rock radio crossover hit Closer, which received extensive airplay on American rock stations and introduced the band to audiences who had never encountered gothic metal before. Shallow Life (2009) pushed further into mainstream hard rock territory and continued their American commercial breakthrough.

Dark Adrenaline (2012), Broken Crown Halo (2014), Delirium (2016), and Black Anima (2019) have demonstrated the band's creative consistency across three decades of recording, with each album exploring different aspects of their gothic and metal influences while maintaining the core duality that defines their sound. Scabbia in particular has become one of the most recognized and respected vocalists in metal, her combination of classical training and rock energy making her a consistent presence on best-of-vocalist lists and a role model for female musicians in heavy music.
