About Monte Montgomery

Monte Montgomery was born on August 11, 1966, in Birmingham, Alabama, the son of a choir director father and a folk-country singer mother. He never picked up a guitar until he moved to the Texas Hill Country in 1979 at the age of 12, and his mother, Maggie, taught him his first chords on the guitar at the age of 13. His journey to guitar stardom started in the Hill Country hamlet near Fredericksburg, Texas, where his mom, herself a folk-country singer and guitarist in Luckenbach, let him strum her guitar while she fingered the chords, and he lived out of the back of her pickup for a while, playing for tips and paying a lot of dues early in his career. He and his mother used to hang out at the Kerrville Folk Festival in Texas, where they met a lot of songwriters , an environment that shaped his early storytelling style and technical foundation as a self-taught fingerstyle player.
