About Norah Jones

Norah Jones was born in 1979 in New York City and raised primarily in Grapevine, Texas, the daughter of concert producer Sue Jones and sitar virtuoso Ravi Shankar. She fell in love with Billie Holiday and Bill Evans as a teenager and attended Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts in Dallas , before studying jazz piano at the University of North Texas. After studying jazz piano at North Texas State University for two years, Jones dropped out and moved to Manhattan in 1999, where she sang and played in the underground music scene, meeting and collaborating with the musicians who would serve as her original backing band. Her early style blended jazz phrasing with country and pop sensibilities, shaped by collaborators like Jesse Harris and Lee Alexander who helped write much of her earliest material.
