About Kris Kristofferson

Kris Kristofferson was born on June 22, 1936, in Brownsville, Texas, and died on September 28, 2024, at his home in Maui, Hawaii, at age 88 — one of the most remarkable figures in American music history and almost certainly the most improbable. The son of a United States Air Force major general, he graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Pomona College with a degree in creative writing in 1958, won a Rhodes Scholarship to Oxford's Merton College where he earned a master's degree in English literature, became an Army Airborne Ranger and helicopter pilot, served in West Germany, and was offered a position teaching English literature at West Point in 1965. He turned it down, resigned his commission, and moved to Nashville to sweep floors at Columbia Recording Studios and write songs. The distance between those two sentences is the essential Kristofferson story.
