Apocalyptica

Apocalyptica — Concert Photography by Wayne Dennon

About Apocalyptica

Apocalyptica formed in Helsinki, Finland, in 1993, when four classically trained cellists, Eicca Toppinen, Paavo Lötjönen, Max Lilja, and Antero Manninen, came together while studying at the Sibelius Academy. The band was formed in 1993 when the four cellists gathered to play Metallica covers at Sibelius Academy, performing at an after-Christmas party as a "Jailhouse Band" at the Teatro Heavy Metal Club. Originally formed as a classical-style tribute band to Metallica, Apocalyptica later developed a neoclassical metal sound that does not rely on conventional guitars and bass. This unlikely premise, four cellos reinterpreting thrash metal, set the group apart from the start and gave them a completely original identity within the metal world.
