Cavo formed in St. Louis, Missouri, coming together in late 2000 and early 2001 when guitarist Chris Hobbs, bassist Ryan Kemp, and drummer Chad La Roy set out to find a vocalist for their new project. In late 2000, guitarist Chris Hobbs, bassist Ryan Kemp, and drummer Chad La Roy were searching for a vocalist, and with input from friends in Modern Day Zero, they auditioned then-unknown singer Casey Walker, who joined by March 2001. Mike Tomasovich soon joined as a second guitarist, the band initially called itself "Hollow" and released a three-song demo, then changed its name to Cavo, the Italian word for "hollow," near the end of 2001. Cavo released their first EP, A Space to Fill, in 2002, produced by Scott Gertken and Rich Criebaum and released through Bullet 339 Records, and the band built a loyal following through relentless live shows, often sharing bills with Modern Day Zero. Rooted in the post-grunge and alternative rock traditions of the early 2000s Midwest scene, the young band spent years honing a heavier, radio-ready sound before finding wider success.
The breakthrough came gradually, through perseverance rather than overnight fame. The band came together in 2001, and a series of setbacks, including one bandmate's disintegrating marriage and another's alcohol problem, helped fuel 2006's The Painful Art of Letting Go. That independent debut led to shows alongside the likes of Staind, and the mounting buzz helped bring Cavo to the attention of Reprise Records, and with 2009's Bright Nights Dark Days and its attendant rowdy sex-and-drugs radio hit "Champagne," the band was off and running. The track "Champagne" caught the attention of 105.7 KPNT in St. Louis, where the single was put into rotation, and its success earned Cavo an opening slot for Stone Temple Pilots, attended by label representatives from Warner Brothers Records, leading to the band being signed to Warner/Reprise late in 2008. The re-released single "Champagne" reached No. 1 on the Billboard Mainstream Rock Charts, and the follow-up single "Crash" reached No. 6 on the Hot Mainstream Rock Tracks. Bright Nights Dark Days, released on August 11, 2009 on Reprise Records, was Cavo's first major label album and debuted at No. 47 on the Billboard 200. The lineup during this peak period centered on vocalist Casey Walker, guitarist Chris Hobbs, drummer Chad La Roy, and bassist Brian Smith, who had joined in 2006.
Cavo's career continued through steady touring and a shifting lineup as the band matured. In 2009, their third single "Let It Go" was featured in the movie Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen and was made available on the soundtrack. The band toured practically nonstop with acts like Daughtry, Lifehouse, and Motley Crue, before launching their first headlining tour and releasing further singles to radio. In 2010, after completing their tour with Daughtry and Lifehouse, Cavo hit the road for their very first headlining tour, with Black Sunshine, Shaman's Harvest, Atom Smash, Brookroyal and American Bang supporting. The band later released Thick as Thieves in 2012 on Eleven Seven Music, continuing to chart on rock radio. In October 2015, the band announced a release date of January 2016 for their third album, Bridges, and joined Meg Myers and Yelawolf for a sold-out hometown show in St. Louis on October 23, 2015, with lead single "Stay" following in December. The band signed with Pavement Entertainment in 2017 and released a deluxe edition of Bridges with three added songs. Cavo has remained active in a lower-key capacity in recent years, continuing to write and release new music while staying rooted in its St. Louis identity. On December 2, 2019, the band released a new single and music video for "Wolves." The band also issued an EP, The Shakes, in December 2022 through Sawhorse Studios. Though never a mainstream household name, Cavo's mainstream rock radio success with "Champagne" and its follow-ups cemented the band's reputation as a durable, hardworking post-grunge outfit that earned its stripes through years of independent grinding before a major label breakthrough, a story that resonated with rock audiences of the late 2000s and early 2010s.
