The band's breakthrough arrived with its self-released 1997 debut, "My Own Prison," which sold over 6 million copies in the United States and established Creed's post-grunge sound, characterized by heavy guitar riffs and introspective lyrics . That success snowballed into genuine stardom with 1999's "Human Clay," which marked their true breakthrough, debuting at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 and earning Diamond certification from the RIAA for over 11 million U.S. sales, surpassing 20 million copies sold globally . Singles like "Higher" became a rock radio staple while "With Arms Wide Open" hit number 1 on the Hot 100 for four weeks and earned a Grammy for Best Rock Song . The classic lineup of Stapp, Tremonti, Marshall, and Phillips defined this era, with Marshall departing in 2000 before the band's third album, "Weathered" (2001), on which Tremonti took over on bass guitar .

Creed's momentum carried them to becoming one of the era's biggest rock acts, but internal strain took its toll, and Stapp's personal issues ultimately brought an end to Creed's heyday, with Wind-Up Records officially announcing the band's breakup in June 2004 . By that point the band had sold over 30 million albums worldwide and had become one of the biggest touring draws of the '90s . In the aftermath, the remaining members partnered with vocalist Myles Kennedy to form Alter Bridge, while Stapp pursued a solo career , before the original members reconvened for 2009's comeback album "Full Circle" and an accompanying tour that ran until 2012.

After another lengthy hiatus, Creed reunited again in July 2023 and subsequently announced headlining tours in 2024, 2025 and 2026 , dubbed the "Summer of '99" tour in honor of the album that made them stars. The run marked the first Creed reunion since their twelve-year hiatus, and it ended up extending well beyond its original 2024 run, with additional dates added in 2025 and 2026 , playing arenas and amphitheaters alongside acts like 3 Doors Down and Daughtry. Decades after their debut, Creed's catalog of anthemic post-grunge hits remains a fixture of classic rock radio, and the band is still remembered as one of the defining commercial forces of late-1990s hard rock, its songs now embraced with a fresh wave of nostalgia by a new generation of fans.

It is fitting that Creed holds a place in this archive.
