Journey

Journey — Concert Photography by Wayne Dennon

About Journey

Journey formed in San Francisco in February 1973, originally billed as the Golden Gate Rhythm Section under the guidance of former Santana road manager Herbie Herbert. The group was renamed Journey in the summer and originally included keyboardist and vocalist Gregg Rolie, lead guitarist Neal Schon, rhythm guitarist George Tickner, bassist Ross Valory and drummer Prairie Prince. Journey made their first public appearance at the Winterland Ballroom on New Year's Eve in 1973, playing to an audience of 10,000 people. In its earliest years the band leaned into an ambitious, jazz-and-progressive-rock influenced sound, a marked departure from the radio-friendly style that would later define it, and lineup instability shaped those first records, with drummer Aynsley Dunbar replacing Prairie Prince in early 1974.
