Serj Tankian

System of a Down's rise through the late 1990s and early 2000s established them as one of hard rock's most singular acts. Tankian, serving as lead vocalist, keyboardist, and songwriter, helped push the band to three chart-topping hit albums, Toxicity, Mezmerize, and Hypnotize, in the early 2000s , cementing their place at the top of the Billboard charts. The band's success was staggering by any measure, as they ultimately released five studio albums, winning a GRAMMY Award in 2006 for "B.Y.O.B." and selling over 40 million albums worldwide . Alongside Tankian, the classic lineup of guitarist Daron Malakian, bassist Shavo Odadjian, and drummer John Dolmayan became one of the most recognizable configurations in modern metal.

System of a Down itself reunited for live performances, and the band performed together in 2023 and 2024, though without completing an additional studio album . In 2024 Tankian published his memoir, further cementing his reputation not just as a genre-defining frontman but as a thoughtful chronicler of his own Armenian-American story, and his influence on politically engaged heavy music remains felt across a generation of artists who followed.
