About Danny Gottlieb

Danny Gottlieb was born Daniel Richard Gottlieb on April 18, 1953, in New York City, and came up through a rigorous jazz education, studying privately with legends like Joe Morello and Mel Lewis before graduating from the University of Miami in 1975 . His formative professional break came when he became a member of the Gary Burton Quartet in 1976 with Pat Metheny , a partnership that would define the next chapter of his career. Around this same period he also appeared on Metheny's early ECM work, playing drums on the 1977 album Watercolors alongside bassist Eberhard Weber and pianist Lyle Mays, an early sign of the fusion sensibility he would help popularize.
